Behind the Scenes: Simple Tips for Better Photos

Published on July 31, 2026 at 10:47 AM

Have you ever wondered what happens behind the scenes of a photography session?

Beautiful photographs are not created by simply showing up, smiling at the camera, and pressing a button. A successful session involves preparation, communication, good lighting, thoughtful posing, and plenty of patience. At Knowles Unlimited Photography, my goal is to make every session feel comfortable, enjoyable, and natural while creating images you will be excited to share and treasure.

Here are a few behind-the-scenes tips that can help you feel more confident and get better results from your next photography session.

Choose Clothing That Feels Like You

The best outfit is one that makes you feel comfortable and confident. You do not have to wear something completely different from your usual style just because you are taking professional photos.

Neutral colors, soft patterns, and coordinating shades often photograph beautifully. For family or couples’ sessions, try choosing outfits that complement one another instead of wearing the exact same colors. Avoid large logos or extremely busy patterns that may distract from the people in the photograph.

Most importantly, choose clothing that fits comfortably and allows you to move naturally.

Pay Attention to the Small Details

Before your session, take a moment to check the little things. Make sure clothing is wrinkle-free, pockets are empty, and hair, makeup, and accessories are arranged the way you would like them photographed.

Small details may not seem noticeable in person, but they can stand out in a photograph. Preparing these things ahead of time allows us to spend more of the session creating beautiful images.

Trust the Lighting

Lighting can completely change the mood and quality of a photograph. This is why photographers often recommend scheduling outdoor sessions during the early morning or closer to sunset.

Soft, natural light is usually more flattering than the harsh sunlight found in the middle of the day. During your session, I may ask you to move into the shade, turn slightly, or face a particular direction. These small adjustments help create smoother skin tones, brighter eyes, and more balanced photographs.

Relax and Keep Moving

Many people feel nervous because they are unsure how to pose. The good news is that you do not have to arrive knowing exactly what to do.

I will guide you throughout the session by suggesting natural movements, flattering positions, and simple interactions. You may be asked to walk together, laugh, hold hands, look at someone you love, or gently adjust your posture.

Movement often creates photographs that feel more relaxed and genuine than holding one stiff pose for too long.

Focus on the Moment, Not the Camera

Some of the most meaningful photographs happen when you temporarily forget the camera is there.

Parents can play with their children, couples can talk and laugh together, and families can simply enjoy being close. These natural interactions help capture real personalities and emotions.

Not every image needs everyone looking directly at the camera. Sometimes the laughter, hugs, quiet glances, and unexpected moments become the photographs you love most.

Give Children Time to Be Themselves

Children may not always smile or follow directions immediately—and that is perfectly okay.

A successful children’s or family session often includes breaks, games, movement, and plenty of patience. Allowing children time to become comfortable usually creates more natural expressions.

Instead of repeatedly asking children to smile, we may use play, silly sounds, conversation, or movement to encourage genuine reactions. The goal is not perfection. The goal is to capture their personality during this stage of life.

Communicate Before Your Session

Sharing your ideas and concerns before the session can make a big difference. Let your photographer know about any meaningful poses, important family relationships, preferred angles, insecurities, or special items you would like included.

Photography is a collaborative experience. The more I understand your vision, the better I can personalize your session and create images that reflect what matters most to you.

Enjoy the Experience

Your photography session should be more than something you simply check off your list. It should be an opportunity to slow down, connect with the people you love, and create new memories.

Do not worry about making every moment perfect. Relax, be present, and trust the process. Some of the best photographs often come from the unexpected moments in between the planned ones.

At Knowles Unlimited Photography, I am here to guide you from the beginning of your session until the final image is delivered. My goal is to create a welcoming experience and photographs that feel natural, meaningful, and true to your story.
